Grammar Point

A Keyphrase should be a short phrase that brings to mind and helps to remember the information on this frame.
かえって

on the contrary, rather, instead, all the more

かえって + Clause

かえって is used as an adverb to indicate that an action or situation resulted in something contrary to what was expected. It often implies that the outcome was the opposite of the intended goal, or that a situation became more intense in an unexpected direction.

Adverbial Use

When placed before a verb, adjective, or a full clause, かえって emphasizes the irony or the unexpected nature of the result.

I took medicine, but I feel worse instead.

I tried to help, but I actually caused more trouble.

It is cheaper to buy a new one than to repair it.

Note

かえって is typically used when someone does something with a specific expectation (like trying to make things better), but the actual result turns out to be the opposite (things got worse). It is not used for simple surprises that don't involve a reversal of expectation.
