かな

I wonder

at sentence end

Informal Form + かな

かな is used at the end of a sentence to express a self-addressed question or a casual question directed at someone close to the speaker. It conveys a sense of uncertainty or 'I wonder'.

Verb

Verbs in their informal forms (present or past) can be followed directly by かな.

I wonder if it will rain.

I wonder if he ate.

い-Adjective

い-Adjectives in their informal forms (present or past) can be followed directly by かな.

I wonder if it's expensive.

I wonder if it was cold.

な-Adjective

For な-Adjectives, the dictionary form (without だ) is used for the present tense. For the past tense, the informal past form is used.

I wonder if she is free.

I wonder if it was quiet.

Noun

For Nouns, the noun itself is used for the present tense (omitting だ). For the past tense, the informal past form is used.

I wonder if that is a cat.

I wonder if it was a Sunday.

Note

かな is very casual and is primarily used in speech. In polite speech, it is often replaced by でしょうか. When used with a Noun or な-Adjective in the present tense, the copula だ is usually omitted before かな.
