なあ

now, ..., well, ..., I tell you!, you know

when seeking confirmation, for emphasis, etc.; used at sentence end

wow, ooh

used to express admiration, emotionality, etc.; used at sentence end

Sentence + なあ

The particle なあ is used at the end of a sentence to express strong emotion, admiration, or a deep feeling about something. It is primarily used in informal speech and is more common among male speakers, though it can be used by anyone in a self-reflective or soliloquizing manner.

Verb or い-Adjective + なあ

When used with verbs or い-adjectives, なあ follows the dictionary form or the past tense form to express exclamation.

This is delicious!

It is hot today, isn't it?

Noun or な-Adjective + だ + なあ

When using な-adjectives or nouns, the copula だ is usually required before なあ to express an exclamatory statement.

He is really energetic.

What a beautiful flower!

Sentence + かなあ

Combining the question particle か with なあ expresses a sense of wondering or doubt directed toward oneself or others.

I wonder if it will rain tomorrow.

I wonder if that is true.

Note

なあ is more common in male speech and sounds quite informal or rough. In feminine speech, ね or ねえ is typically used instead. なあ is often used when talking to oneself to express a realization or a wish. When used with the particle か (as in かなあ), it expresses a sense of wondering or uncertainty. It can also be used to make a soft request or to seek agreement in very informal settings.
