Grammar Point

A Keyphrase should be a short phrase that brings to mind and helps to remember the information on this frame.
ながら(も)

while, although, though, despite, in spite of, notwithstanding

Verb, Adjective, or Noun + ながら(も)

This grammar point is used to express a contradiction or a contrast between two states or actions. It is primarily used in formal or written Japanese to mean 'although' or 'despite'. When the particle も is added, it emphasizes the sense of 'even though'.

Verb ます stem + ながら(も)

When used with verbs, it attaches to the ます stem to indicate that despite the action or state described by the verb, something else is true.

Although I know it is bad, I cannot stop.

い-Adjective + ながら(も)

For い-adjectives, the grammar point follows the dictionary form directly to show a contrast between the quality of the adjective and the following statement.

Although it is small, it is a very good house.

Noun / な-Adjective stem + ながら(も)

Nouns and な-adjectives (using their stem) can precede ながら(も) to express 'despite being X' or 'even though it is X'.

Although he is a child, he knows a lot.

Although it was unfortunate, it was a good experience.

Note

ながら(も) is more formal than the similar conjunction けれども. It is often used with verbs related to state or condition, such as ある (to be), いる (to be), or 知る (to know). It should not be confused with the other ながら which means 'while doing' two actions simultaneously.
