において/おける

in, on, at (place), as for, regarding

Noun + において

において is a formal compound particle used to indicate the location, time, or field in which an action, event, or state occurs. It is often used in writing, news, or formal speeches instead of the particle で.

Location or Time

When used with a noun, it marks the physical location or the time period of an event.

The meeting will be held in the conference room.

This law was established in the 19th century.

Field or Situation

It can also mark a specific field, area of expertise, or abstract situation.

He is very famous in the field of medicine.

Note

において is primarily used in formal contexts. In casual conversation, で is used instead. It cannot be used to indicate the location of a person or object's existence (for that, に is used).

Noun 1 + おける + Noun 2

おける is the attributive form of において. It is used when the location or time needs to directly modify a following noun, acting like an adjective.

Noun Modification

This structure connects two nouns to show that the second noun exists or occurs within the context of the first noun.

The responsibility in this company is heavy.

Life in the future will change.

Note

おける must always be followed by a noun. It functions similarly to the particle の, but carries a more formal and specific tone regarding the location or context.
