のみ

only, nothing but

literary equiv. of だけ

Noun / Verb + のみ

のみ is a particle used to express a limit on an action, event, or state. It is the formal or literary equivalent of the particle だけ. It can be attached directly to nouns, and verbs to indicate that there is nothing else besides the mentioned item.

Noun + のみ

When attached to a noun, it limits the scope to just that specific thing.

This is for members only.

I only need water.

Verb (Dictionary form) + のみ

When attached to the dictionary form of a verb, it indicates that the action is the only thing being done.

I am just waiting.

He only laughed.

Note

のみ is primarily used in formal writing, speeches, or literary contexts. In everyday conversation, だけ is much more common. When used with particles like に, で, or と, のみ can either precede or follow them, though placing it after the particle is more standard in formal Japanese.
