の下でのもとで

under (guidance, supervision, rules, the law, etc.)

oft. のもとに or のもとで

Noun + の下で / のもとで

Indicates that an action or situation occurs under the influence, guidance, control, or specific conditions provided by a person, organization, or abstract concept.

Used to describe a figurative 'under' (supervision, conditions, or atmosphere) rather than physical location. When written in kanji (下), it is read as 'moto' in this context.

I am studying Japanese under a good teacher.

The children grew up under the love of their parents.

The game was held under new rules.

They are working under the supervision of the manager.

Note

While 'の下で' (no moto de) can be written with the kanji for 'below', hiragana (のもとで) is often preferred to distinguish it from physical proximity (shita). Additionally, '〜の下に' (no moto ni) is used when the following verb describes a state or a result (e.g., 'to gather under'), whereas '〜の下で' (no moto de) focuses on the action taking place within those conditions.
