っぽい

-ish, -like

[Noun / Adjective Stem / Verb Stem] + っぽい

Attached to nouns, adjective stems, or verb stems to indicate a quality, appearance, or tendency. This suffix transforms the base word into an い-adjective (e.g., っぽくない, っぽかった). It is informal and often carries a negative or dismissive nuance.

Noun + っぽい

Indicates characteristics of the noun; often implies something is 'childish' or 'cheap'. When used with colors, it means '-ish' (e.g., blackish).

That person's behavior is very childish.

Adjective Stem (い/な) + っぽい

Attached to the stem (removing the final い or な) to emphasize a specific, often excessive or undesirable, quality.

This soup is very oily.

It seems a little bit strange today.

Verb ます stem + っぽい

Attached to the ます stem to indicate a personality trait, habit, or a frequent tendency to perform an action.

He is forgetful.

Note

More informal than らしい. Primarily used for sensory qualities (oily, thick), mental states (forgetting), or physical appearances (childish).
