nominalizes verbs and adjectives


Verb or Adjective +

The particle acts as a pronoun that replaces a noun that has already been mentioned or is understood from context. It is used to avoid repeating the noun and can mean 'one' or 'the one'.

い-Adjective +

When used after an い-Adjective, replaces the noun the adjective would normally describe.


I will buy the red one.

な-Adjective + な +

When used after a な-Adjective, the particle な must be placed between the adjective stem and .


I want a quiet one.

Verb (Informal form) +

can follow a verb in its informal form (present or past) to refer to the person or thing that performs or receives the action.


The one I ate was delicious.

Note

cannot be used to replace abstract concepts or when the noun being replaced is not a physical object or a specific person.
