The particle is repeated after two or more items of the same grammatical category to indicate that all of them are included in the statement. In affirmative sentences, it translates to 'both A and B' or 'A as well as B'. In negative sentences, it translates to 'neither A nor B'.

Affirmative Use

Used to list multiple nouns that are included in an affirmative statement.


I like both dogs and cats.

I ate both bread and fruit.

Negative Use

Used with a negative verb to indicate that none of the listed items apply.


I drink neither tea nor coffee.

Neither the teacher nor the student was there.

Note

When is used, it replaces the particles は, が, and を. However, other particles like に, と, or で are usually kept and followed by (e.g., に, と). When used with a negative verb, the entire group is negated.
