として

Noun + として

The particle として is used to indicate the capacity, role, function, or viewpoint of a person or thing. It defines the status under which an action is performed or a statement is made.

Role or Capacity

This indicates the specific role or capacity someone has while performing an action.


I am working as a teacher.

He came to Japan as a student.

Function or Purpose

This indicates the function or purpose of an object or place.


This room is used as a library.

I bought this for a gift.

Viewpoint

This indicates a specific standpoint or perspective from which a judgment is made.


For me, that is very important.

Note

として is often followed by particles like は, も, or の. When followed by の, it allows the noun phrase to modify another noun (e.g., Noun1 としての Noun2).
