Grammar Point

みる

to try ..., to have a go at ..., to give ... a try

after the -te form of a verb

Verb て form + みる

The grammar point ~てみる is used to express the idea of trying something out to see what the result will be, or to see what something is like. It implies a sense of experimentation or 'giving it a go' rather than necessarily putting in a great effort to achieve a difficult goal.

Attach みる to the て form of any verb to indicate the action is being done as a trial or to check the outcome.

I will try eating this.

I want to try wearing that kimono.

I tried reading the book.

Please try asking the teacher.

Note

When written as a grammar point after a verb, みる is usually written in hiragana. Because みる is a verb itself, it can be conjugated into various forms such as ~てみたい (want to try), ~てみた (tried), or ~てみてください (please try).
