Grammar Point

ように

in order to (e.g. meet goal), so that, take care (so as)

Verb (Non-past) + ように

This grammar point expresses a purpose or a goal. It is used to describe doing something in such a way that a certain state or event can be realized. It is typically used with verbs that do not represent a conscious will, such as potential verbs, negative verbs, or verbs that describe a state.

Potential Verb / Non-volitional Verb

The potential form or a non-volitional verb is used before ように to indicate a goal or a desired state.

I study every day so that I can speak Japanese.

I will leave early so that I can catch the bus.

Verb (Negative form)

The negative form of a verb is used before ように to indicate an action taken to prevent a certain situation from happening.

I will take an umbrella so that I don't get wet.

Please speak loudly so that I don't forget.

Note

Unlike ために, which is used for direct goals involving volitional actions, ように is used when the result is somewhat outside of the speaker's direct control, such as 'so that I can' or 'so that I don't'.
